To use Sage or Palo Santo: Open windows in each room that you seek to smudge. Burn at either end of the stick until it has a fire cherry. Extinguish fire for the desired amount of smoke. Wave the stick while speaking smudging ritual. Circular motions or waving is appropriate to keep the fire cherry lit. You may need to re light the stick if it goes out. It's okay to set the stick on a non flammable dish and fan the smoke instead of holding it! Always speak intentions when smudging:

I cleanse this room of all evil, negativity and unclean energy. I replace it with love, peacefulness and harmony. I cast out any entities that mean my family harm. You are not welcome here and I force you out with my living energy. I protect my loved ones from harm and injustice against them. May no one who wishes us harm enter here. I un-invite any being that no longer serves me. I reawaken purpose, motivation and happiness in my home. Repeat in each room
